Drive |

Driving in Singapore is a breeze. Navigating around the island is easy
as there are well-marked road signs which are all in English.
Driving Licence
A valid driving licence from your country of residence or a valid International
Driving License is required for driving in Singapore. Conversion of foreign
driving licenses to Singapore driving licenses can be done at the Traffic
Police Department, 10 Ubi Avenue 3, Singapore 408865. Tel: 547 0000.
Parking
There are three ways of parking in Singapore - coupon
parking, paid parking and season parking. Coupon Parking
Where required, parking coupons should be displayed on the dashboard.
Denominations of parking coupons are SGD 0.45, 0.90, 1.80 and 2 (for overnight
parking).
Look for signboards which indicate parking rates and free parking times
as they vary between car parks. Parking coupons are available from petrol
stations, post offices, shopping centres and neighbourhood spots.
Paid Parking
Paid parking is practised in almost all shopping centres, buildings and
some public car parks. You basically pay for the time your vehicle is
parked. Some shopping centres offer a rebate on your parking charges.
Season Parking
Season parking is usually applicable to tenants and residents at their
office and residential car parks respectively. Avoid parking in season
parking lots (usually with red markings) and along roads with double yellow
lines. Speed Limit
Residential areas: 50km/h
Expressways: 80 to 90km/h Speed Cameras
Speed cameras are installed throughout the island Bus
Lanes
Bus lanes or left lanes with unbroken yellow lines should only be used
by buses during these hours: Mon to Fri (7:30 am to 9:30 am, 4:30 pm to
7:00 pm), Sat (7:30 am to 9:30 am, 11:30 am to 2:00 pm). Electronic
Road Pricing Scheme (ERP)
To even out traffic flow into the Central Business District (CBD), all
vehicles entering during the restricted hours of 7:30 am to 7:00 pm are
required to pay a toll.
To relieve congestion between 7:30 am and 9:30 am along the expressways
and busy roads, all vehicles passing through ERP gantries are required
to pay a toll. An In-Vehicle Unit (IU) is installed in the vehicle and
a CashCard (stored value card) is used to pay for tolls. The IU automatically
deducts the toll from the CashCard each time the vehicle passes through
ERP gantries.
Locations of gantries along the East Coast Parkway (ECP) expressway are:
- Between Fort Road junction and Rochor Road exit
- Entry to ECP from Ophir Road towards Jurong
Locations of gantries along the Central Expressway (CTE) towards the city
are :
- On the CTE southbound between Ang Mo Kio Ave 1 and Braddell Road
- On the CTE after Braddell Road
- Entry to CTE from Serangoon Road
- Entry to CTE from Balestier Road
Location of gantry along the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) towards the city
is :
- On the AYE eastbound after Portsdown Road
Location of gantries along the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) are :
- On the PIE towards Jurong after Kallang Bahru
- On the eastbound PIE after Adam Road
- Entry to eastbound PIE from Mount Pleasant slip road
Locations of gantries at other busy roads are :
- At Thomson Road southbound after Toa Payoh Rise
- At Kallang Road westbound after Kallang River
- At Bendemeer Road southbound after Woodsville interchange
ERP is not in operation on major public holidays: New Year; Lunar New
Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali and Christmas. In-Vehicle
Units (IU)
Foreign-registered cars can be fitted with a Permanent IU (installation
cost SGD150) or a Temporary IU (TIU) for the ERP scheme. TIU rentals cost
SGD5 a day (two days min) with a deposit of SGD120. TIUs can be renewed
at TIU sales outlets. Two outlets are near the Woodlands Checkpoint and
one more is at the Tuas Checkpoint. CashCards
CashCards are available at 7-Eleven convenience stores, CashCard Auto
Machines, selected banks and most petrol stations. Important
